Those of you lucky enough to be setting up a Netscaler appliance, AKA Citrix Access Gateway, may be wondering how the thing is licensed and how it integrates with your Citrix License server.
I had the same question myself, so I read through the various documentation and contacted Citrix Support for clarification on some points. Here’s the skinny in a few sentences. Note, I am working with the Enterprise Edition product version 8.1, running on the Netscaler model 7000.
- The Access Gateway uses a license server that is internal to the Netscaler appliance.
- The Netscaler does not interact with the Citrix license server in any way. Any license usage tracking is done on the appliance only.
- All license files are installed on the appliance, as per the two notes above, not the citrix server.
- The license files will need to use the hostname of the appliance, not any virtual server names you may have setup and, it IS case sensitive.
To check any errors in licensing, you can use putty to SSH into the device and run the command “show licensing” as well as, type shell, navigate to /var/log/, then type cat license.log
